DIN 471 (-1):2011 External Retaining Ring is installed in a groove on a shaft to provide axial positioning and retention. The external ring forms a reliable shoulder on shaft components, preventing bearings, gears, washers, or sleeves from moving axially.
It is commonly used in motors, gear reducers, transmission shafts, pumps, automotive components, and general machinery. Compared with threaded locking components, a retaining ring offers compact installation and is suitable for axial retention designs requiring limited space and quick assembly or removal.
The proper size should be selected according to shaft diameter, groove dimensions, spring material, and corrosion-resistance requirements to maintain stable retaining performance during rotation, vibration, and maintenance disassembly.
